Eat more: olive oil, fish, other vegetables, leafy greens, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds, fruit. A Mediterranean-style pattern is the most studied diet for fatty liver and lowers liver fat.
Limit: sugar sweetened beverage, added sugar, refined grains, fried food, red meat, alcohol. Cut added sugar, sugary drinks, refined carbohydrate, and saturated-fat sources; fructose and excess calories drive liver fat.
Losing 3 to 5 percent of body weight improves liver fat; more than 10 percent is generally needed to improve inflammation and scarring.
Heavy alcohol use should be avoided with fatty liver.
